How to make videos with GitHub Copilot CLI
GitHub Copilot CLI brings Copilot's agent to your terminal. Add Cliptude as a remote HTTP server with one command, sign in, and Copilot can write a narration from files in your repo, upload your own voiceover, and have Cliptude render a finished 16:9 YouTube video from 6 to 60 minutes long.
Cliptude MCP server URL
https://mcp.cliptude.com/mcp
Streamable HTTP. OAuth: run /mcp auth cliptude when the server shows needs-auth, and finish the sign-in in your browser. Or an Authorization: Bearer header with a clp_ key from /developers/.
How to connect GitHub Copilot CLI to Cliptude
- Install Copilot CLI (npm needs Node.js 22 or later; Homebrew, WinGet and an install script also work), then run copilot and sign in with your GitHub account.
npm install -g @github/copilot - Add Cliptude as a remote HTTP server. It is saved to ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json.
copilot mcp add --transport http cliptude https://mcp.cliptude.com/mcp - Start copilot and run /mcp. If cliptude shows needs-auth, sign in with your Cliptude Google account:
/mcp auth cliptude - Or use a key from /developers/ instead of the sign-in:
copilot mcp add --transport http --header "Authorization: Bearer clp_…" cliptude https://mcp.cliptude.com/mcp - Install the Cliptude skills for Copilot, then run /skills reload in an open session:
npx skills add cliptude/cliptude -a github-copilot -g - Ask Copilot to list your Cliptude templates.
The entry in ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json (type http is the Streamable HTTP transport):
{
"mcpServers": {
"cliptude": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://mcp.cliptude.com/mcp",
"tools": ["*"]
}
}
}
Inside a session, /mcp add opens a form instead: choose HTTP as the Server Type, paste the URL, leave Tools as *, and press Ctrl+S. The server is available at once, with no restart.
Which way should I connect GitHub Copilot CLI to Cliptude?
Remote MCP server
Start herePaste the URL and sign in with Google. Nothing to install.
Local MCP server
Worksuvx cliptude-mcp with a clp_ key; it can send files from your disk.
CLI and skill
WorksThe Cliptude CLI and skill, for agents that run shell commands.
Why make videos with GitHub Copilot CLI and Cliptude?
Your own voiceover
Copilot runs shell commands, so it can upload a narration file from your repo for the video.
Check back on a timer
/every 10m get_job keeps an eye on the render while the session stays open.
Per-tool approval
Allow read-only Cliptude tools and keep anything that spends credits on manual approval.
Up to an hour long
Finished 16:9 YouTube videos from 6 to 60 minutes, rendered as one MP4.
Real footage and graphics
Cliptude sources footage and archive pictures and builds animated maps, charts, captions and music around the narration.
The price before the build
estimate_credits quotes a job and checks your balance without creating or charging anything.
A Copilot CLI workflow: your own voiceover, then a timed check
- Keep the episode in a repo: scripts/ for narration and narration/ for recordings. Start copilot in that folder with read-only Cliptude tools pre-approved: copilot --allow-tool='cliptude(list_templates), cliptude(estimate_credits), cliptude(get_job)'.
- If you recorded the narration yourself, ask Copilot to upload narration/episode4.mp3: it calls start_voiceover_upload with the file name and size, PUTs each part to the signed URLs with a shell command, and calls finish_voiceover_upload for a voiceover_url. If not, ask it to write the narration with /cliptude-script.
- Ask for estimate_credits, then create_job with your template, the voiceover_url or script, and a thumbnail reference video. Copilot shows Cliptude's review; you confirm, and it sends create_job again with the review_token.
- Type /every 10m check Cliptude job <id> with get_job and tell me when it is completed. Copilot runs the check on that interval while the session stays open; type /every with no arguments to remove it.
- When the video is done, ask for open_editor_project and view_scenes from the first scene to the last, fix any wrong shot with run_agent, and render_project.
- For a draft every week without the session open, run copilot -p from cron with only list_templates and estimate_credits allowed, so it writes and prices the script but cannot start a paid job.
GitHub Copilot CLI skills: adding the Cliptude skills
Copilot CLI loads agent skills, folders with a SKILL.md file. It picks a skill on its own when your request matches the skill's description, or you name it with a leading slash, such as "Use the /cliptude-script skill to write the narration."
It looks in a repository's .github/skills/, .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/, then in ~/.copilot/skills/ and ~/.agents/skills/, then in plugin folders and any folders listed in COPILOT_SKILLS_DIRS. If two skills share a name, the first one found wins.
The skills CLI's github-copilot target writes to .agents/skills/ for a project and ~/.copilot/skills/ with -g, both folders Copilot CLI reads. Copilot also has its own commands: copilot skill add takes a file, URL or folder, and inside a session /skills add, /skills list, /skills info and /skills reload manage them. Skills are switched on and off with copilot skill enable and copilot skill disable.
Plugins are a separate layer: /plugin install takes a marketplace spec, GitHub repository, git URL or local path. Cliptude does not publish a Copilot CLI plugin, so install the skills and add the MCP server as above.
npx skills add cliptude/cliptude -a github-copilot -g
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/cliptude/cliptude /tmp/cliptude-repo
copilot skill add /tmp/cliptude-repo/mcp_server/skills/cliptude
copilot skill add /tmp/cliptude-repo/mcp_server/skills/cliptude-script
copilot skill add /tmp/cliptude-repo/mcp_server/skills/cliptude-plan

Copilot CLI vs Claude Code for making YouTube videos
Both work with the same Cliptude server and skills, and both can upload a voiceover from your disk because they run shell commands. Copilot CLI is the low-cost start if you already have a GitHub Copilot plan, and it reads skills from .claude/skills, so a repo set up for Claude Code works as is. Claude Code is the better fit if you want a weekly video run in the cloud with your computer off; Copilot's /every schedules stop when you close the session.
| GitHub Copilot CLI | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Price to start | Included in every Copilot plan, Free ($0) included; paid plans from $10 a month | Most surfaces need a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account |
| Models | Switch with /model; or bring an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, Azure OpenAI or Anthropic | Claude models; the CLI, VS Code and JetBrains also support third-party providers |
| Scheduled prompts | /every and /after, only while the session that created them stays open (10 seconds to 24 hours) | Cloud scheduled tasks that run with your computer off, Desktop scheduled tasks, and /loop |
| Skills folders | Reads .github/skills, .agents/skills, .claude/skills, ~/.copilot/skills and ~/.agents/skills | Reads its own skills folders and CLAUDE.md (or AGENTS.md) |
| Tool approval | --allow-tool='cliptude(estimate_credits)' per tool; deny rules always win | Per-tool permissions and hooks |
Is GitHub Copilot CLI free?
Copilot CLI needs an active Copilot plan, and the Free plan includes it with limited chat and agent usage. Paid plans for individuals are Pro at $10 a month, Pro+ at $39 and Max at $100, each with GitHub AI credits; extra usage costs $0.01 a credit under a budget you set. Copilot CLI and agent mode draw on those AI credits, at a rate that depends on the model and the task.
Copilot's credits pay for the agent's writing and tool calls. The video is charged separately to your Cliptude credits, on a plan from $19; Cliptude has no free plan.

What is GitHub Copilot CLI?
GitHub Copilot CLI is the command-line interface for GitHub Copilot: you run copilot in a terminal and work with Copilot's agent there, interactively or with -p for a single prompt. It reads and edits files, runs commands with your approval, and can be extended with MCP servers, skills, custom agents, hooks and plugins. It needs a Copilot plan, and the Free plan includes the CLI.
GitHub Copilot CLI or Copilot in VS Code?
Both are Copilot's agent and both take MCP servers. The CLI keeps its servers in ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json and suits scripts, scheduled prompts and voiceover uploads from the shell; VS Code adds Cliptude with MCP: Add Server.
What can you ask GitHub Copilot CLI to do?
"Use the /cliptude-script skill to write a 12-minute narration on the Apollo 13 rescue into scripts/apollo13.md, then estimate the credits with my Space template."
"Upload narration/episode4.mp3 as my voiceover and make it with my Documentary template."
"Check job <id> every 10 minutes and tell me when the video is ready."
Copilot asks before each tool call unless you pre-approve it. Pre-approve read-only Cliptude tools with --allow-tool='cliptude(list_templates), cliptude(estimate_credits), cliptude(get_job)' and keep create_job, continue_job and render_project on manual approval, because they spend credits.
Copilot CLI runs shell commands in your project, so it can PUT a local narration file to the signed URLs that start_voiceover_upload returns, then call finish_voiceover_upload and pass the voiceover_url to create_job.
Which videos can GitHub Copilot CLI make?
Each format is 16:9 and made from a template you save once. On agent-planned formats the agent chooses every shot and graphic itself.
Faceless Documentary Agent-planned
Narrated documentaries over real footage, archive pictures, maps and charts.
Faceless Top 10 Agent-planned
Ranked countdowns with a numbered title on every entry, ending on number one.
Avatar Video Agent-planned
An AI presenter on screen, with footage and graphics around it.
Vector Explainer Agent-planned
Flat 2D vector scenes, with an optional recurring character.
Talking Head
Your own camera recording, with captions, B-roll and music added.
What the Cliptude MCP server can do
44 tools in 7 groups: templates, voices and avatars (9), making a video (8), product videos from a store (4), agent-planned videos (12), your own narration (2), editing a finished video (8), account (1). Your agent sees them all once connected; estimate_credits, create_job and get_job are the ones most videos need. Every tool, with what it does
Troubleshooting
- cliptude shows needs-auth or 401: run /mcp auth cliptude for a fresh browser sign-in. On a remote terminal, add --device-code to use the device code flow.
- The skills do not appear: run /skills reload or start a new session, then check with /skills info cliptude.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add an MCP server to GitHub Copilot CLI?
Run copilot mcp add --transport http <name> <url>, or use /mcp add inside a session. For Cliptude: copilot mcp add --transport http cliptude https://mcp.cliptude.com/mcp.
Where is the Copilot CLI MCP config?
In ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json. Edit it to add several servers at once or to share a setup.
Does Copilot CLI need an API key for Cliptude?
No. Sign in with /mcp auth cliptude. A clp_ key in an Authorization header is the alternative, for example on a headless machine.
Can Copilot CLI use the Cliptude skills?
Yes. Copilot CLI reads skills from ~/.copilot/skills, ~/.agents/skills and a repo's .github/skills, .agents/skills or .claude/skills.
What does a video cost?
A faceless documentary is 22 credits a minute with your own voiceover and 40 with an ElevenLabs voice, on plans from $19/mo. Copilot's AI credits are billed separately by GitHub.
Is there a free plan?
No. Cliptude has no free plan and no free credits.
How do I install GitHub Copilot CLI?
Run npm install -g @github/copilot (Node.js 22 or later), brew install --cask copilot-cli, winget install GitHub.Copilot, or curl -fsSL https://gh.io/copilot-install | bash. Then run copilot and sign in.
What is Copilot CLI?
"The command-line interface (CLI) for GitHub Copilot allows you to use Copilot directly from your terminal." It works interactively or with -p for one prompt that exits when done.
Is GitHub Copilot CLI free?
The Copilot Free plan includes the CLI with limited agent usage. Paid plans start at $10 a month (Pro).
Copilot CLI vs Claude Code: which should I use with Cliptude?
Both connect to the same server and skills. Copilot CLI comes with any Copilot plan and schedules prompts only inside an open session; Claude Code needs a Claude plan or Console account but can run scheduled tasks in the cloud.
Does Copilot CLI support plugins?
Yes. /plugin install adds a plugin from a marketplace spec, GitHub repository, git URL or local path, and copilot plugin manages them from the command line.
Can Copilot CLI run a prompt on a schedule?
Inside a session, /every 30m <prompt> repeats a prompt and /after runs one once. They fire only while that session stays open; for unattended runs GitHub suggests cron or Task Scheduler.
Make your first video from your agent
Plans from $19/mo to $875/mo, priced per finished minute; a 1-hour documentary costs from $32. Cliptude has no free plan, so watch the sample videos first to judge the output.
